The best approach to manage, store and dispose of waste glass bottles is a well debated subject amongst the many bar, restaurant and hotel owners in the hospitality industry. The generally accepted practice is to collect empty glass bottles in a bottle bin which, when full, is wheeled through the bar and into a bottle storage area where the bottles are sorted and eventually collected by a waste management company who charge for that service.
The current process is labour intensive and more often than not, happens at the expense of customer service. Moving waste glass bottles means a relatively small quantity of glass and a large quantity of air (up to 80% of an empty glass bottle is occupied by air) being transported from the serving area to an often cluttered waste glass storage location.
A glass bottle crusher can alleviate a number of these problems. Crushing glass bottles as they are poured or returned from the floor reduces their physical volume by up to 80% and eliminates the majority of labour involving in their handling. Crushing bottles away from the bar i.e. in the bottle storage area also reduces the manual handling along with dramatically reducing the storage space requirements for those bottles. In conclusion, crushing waste glass bottles frees up staff to concentrate on customer service, reduces waste glass bottles handling costs and potentially makes valuable floor space available for other more profitable uses
The PEL Waste Reduction Equipment guide to buying a bottle crusher provides advice to businesses contemplating this option for managing their waste glass bottles. It explains the purpose of a bottle crusher and highlights the important questions to ask when considering such an acquisition.
